The Newman Civic Fellowship, a national award, recognizes and supports community-committed students who are changemakers and public problem-solvers at Campus Compact member institutions.

At the on April 13, Louise Ba ’24 was officially announced as a 2022–23 Newman Fellow. An Antonian Honors student who speaks five languages, Ba is studying political science, economics, and public policy. From mentoring other students in Peer Money Mentors and the Office of Multicultural and International Programs and Services (MIPS), to her work in the Minnesota Center for Diversity in Economics, Ba has already had a tremendous impact on her community both in and outside the St. Kate’s gates.

The Engaged Campus Award for Alumni Leadership, awarded to just one person across Minnesota and Iowa, recognizes an alum of a member institution making strong contributions to their community and demonstrating the values of the civic mission of higher education.

Minnesota State Senator Mary Kunesh ’95 has embodied meaningful leadership in her vital work bringing light to the issue of murdered and missing Indigenous women (MMIW), first as a teacher in Robbinsdale Area Schools, and later as a member of Minnesota’s House of Representatives, where she passed the first-ever bill to establish a Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women task force. Kunesh’s work is grounded in her connections to her community and her calling.

The Presidents’ Student Leadership Award is given to an individual student or a student organization that models a deep commitment to civic responsibility and leadership, evidenced by initiative, innovative and collaborative approaches to addressing public issues, effective community building, and integration of civic engagement into the college experience.

Ania Salcedo ’22 is a senior double majoring in international studies and history and minoring in political science. As a bilingual, first-generation student, Salcedo is committed to immigrant advocacy and equitable education opportunities. Her leadership on and off campus has had an incredible impact, from her work with St. Kate’s Civic Engagement Collective and Student Senate, to the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota and oral history work with West Side Community Organization. Salcedo has demonstrated her commitment to creating a more inclusive democracy.

The Presidents’ Civic Engagement Leadership Award is for a member of the faculty, administration, or staff or for a group (e.g., advisory committee, task force, project team) that has significantly advanced their campus’ distinctive civic mission by forming strong partnerships, supporting others’ civic and community engagement, and working to institutionalize a culture and practice of engagement.

(WTDN) is an interdisciplinary, community-engaged, multi-year effort uncovering the historical and present-day racial segregation experienced by BIPOC residents of Ramsey County, through exploration of racial covenants. Faculty and staff have supported hundreds of students learning about systemic racism, analyzing housing deeds to help build the map of racial covenants with Mapping Prejudice, and many working on projects per their discipline in support of ongoing community efforts. The Presidents’ Community Partner Award is for a community-based individual or organization that has enhanced the quality of life in the community in meaningful and measurable ways and has engaged in the development of sustained, reciprocal partnerships with the college or university, thus enriching educational as well as community outcomes.

has been a steadfast community partner of ÑÇÉ«Ó°¿â, partnering with America Reads and Community Leaders programs as well as service-learning courses. This year, the collaboration with the Health Careers Program expanded to the English Language Learning program. Roosevelt High School staff support this collaboration in ways that mentor and impact both St. Kate’s and Roosevelt High School students.
