亚色影库 has chosen Ania Salcedo '22 to represent the University as a Campus Compact Newman Fellow, joining the largest group of Newman Civic Fellows to date in the 2020 cohort.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program for students from Campus Compact member institutions. The students selected for the fellowship are leaders on their campuses who demonstrate a commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities locally, nationally, and internationally.

Salcedo, a double major in international studies and history with a minor in political science, is an active member of the Student Senate, has served as president of the Latinx Student Association, and works through St. Kate鈥檚 Community Leaders program as a legal intern at the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota. There, she has assisted Spanish-speaking children and adults with English language acquisition, provided translation services, supported families whose relatives have been detained with the court process, and educated the general public about the complexities of immigration and its ramifications.

The fellowship is named for the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact鈥檚 founders, who was a tireless advocate for civic engagement in higher education. In the spirit of Dr. Newman鈥檚 leadership, Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors may nominate one student from their institution for the fellowship.

鈥淎nia is already living out our University鈥檚 vision of 鈥榚ducating women to lead and influence鈥 as seen through her leadership roles at and beyond 亚色影库, and in particular, her continued commitment to immigrant communities,鈥 said Becky Roloff 鈥76, president of 亚色影库. 鈥淚 have no doubt Ania will continue to work toward justice for immigrants as well as for our entire human family.鈥

Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides the students with a variety of learning and networking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional, and civic growth. Each year, Fellows are invited to a national, in-person conference of Newman Civic Fellows and participate in numerous virtual training and networking opportunities. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.

鈥淲e are proud to recognize each of these extraordinary student leaders and thrilled to have the opportunity to engage with them,鈥 said Campus Compact President Andrew Seligsohn. 鈥淭he stories of this year's Newman Civic Fellows make clear that they are committed to finding solutions to pressing problems in their communities and beyond. That is what Campus Compact is about, and it's what our country and our world desperately need.鈥
