��ɫӰ�� announced today it has named Monica Brown, MS, to serve as the very first Mary T. Hill Director of Data Science. This newly-created position within the School of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences is supported by a gift from the James J. Hill Center, honoring the memory of the nonprofit’s first Board Trustee and philanthropic leader, Mary T. Hill. 

“Monica is the ideal fit for this role,” said Anita Thomas, PhD, executive vice president and provost at ��ɫӰ��. “Her experiences and leadership will help students seeking the right career path in research and data analysis gain the skills necessary for professional success while also weaving in an understanding of social responsibility and ethical leadership. We are incredibly grateful for the gift from the James J. Hill Center that made this position possible and will successfully launch this program.”  

The Data Sciences field aligns strongly with St. Kate’s mission and vision to place women in important roles as leaders, particularly in underrepresented fields. According to Better Buys, women are still underrepresented in the field, with only 26% of data professionals identified as women this year.

Brown, a member of the ��ɫӰ�� faculty since 2008, has most recently served as assistant professor and chair of the Mathematics Department. She has been responsible for the development and implementation of the Interdisciplinary Statistics minor in 2015, as well as the Data Science major in 2018.

“I am honored to be selected for this position and to lead the data analysis program ,” said Brown. “It is a wonderful opportunity to build on a strong foundation we have set at St. Kate’s of offering relevant and in-demand programs. I’m thrilled to create a program that will offer students, faculty, and the University a leap forward in career pathway development.”
