亚色影库 welcomed 12 new members to the Phi Beta Kappa organization during an induction ceremony last week. The ceremony recognized the academic and intellectual achievements of the students as they signed their names into the Phi Beta Kappa ledger, a physical record of all the St. Kate鈥檚 students who have ever been welcomed into the society.
Phi Beta Kappa is the nation鈥檚 oldest academic honor society. Founded in 1776, the organization exists to celebrate excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Students who demonstrate intellectual integrity, openness to other viewpoints and have a broad range of academic interests are eligible for selection. Society members have included 17 U.S. presidents, 39 Supreme Court justices and more than 130 Nobel Laureates.
New members are selected by a nomination process through the St. Kate鈥檚 chapter. Students in their junior or senior year are eligible for nomination. The chapter may choose up to 10 percent of students graduating in the liberal arts and sciences for nomination.
St. Kate鈥檚 was awarded a Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in 1937. Since then, 1,266 Katies have been inducted into the society.
