University community mourns the loss of Julie Belle White-Newman, professor emerita

Julie Belle White-Newman

Professor emerita Julie Belle White-Newman died on December 4, 2017, at home in Naples, Florida.

Julie Belle worked at St. Kate鈥檚 from 1975-2008. She was an associate professor of speech communication from 1975-2005 and was chair of the speech and theatre department from 1975-1981. From 1981-1985, she was director of continuing education and during this time, co-founded the Weekend College.

Julie Belle helped to found and develop the majority of the curriculum for the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program, the first such program in the country, and was an associate professor in MAOL from 1985-2005. The first course in her curriculum was 鈥淟earning Effective Followership.鈥

She was an interim Dean of Arts and Sciences and a special assistant to Sr. Andrea Lee from 2006-2008.

In 2008, Julie Belle retired to Naples with her husband John. She became a guardian ad litem and was an active volunteer and community leader.

A celebration of life will take place in Naples on January 22. Plans are being finalized for a tribute and celebration at St. Kate鈥檚 on May 3. In lieu of flowers, Julie Belle鈥檚 family has asked for memorials to 亚色影库 (stkate.edu/give) or The Guardian Ad Litem Foundation ().
