On Tuesday, August 7, the St. Kate鈥檚 鈥 St. Thomas School of Social Work will host the Field Practice Institute Seventh Annual Summit on Emerging Issues in Social Work. This year鈥檚 summit 鈥 鈥淗ealthy Communities: Broadening the Lens of Healthcare, Equity, and Policy鈥 鈥 will include nonprofit and state agency representatives who will share details on efforts to continue developing equitable healthcare activities, programs and policies that reflect a broad understanding of what creates health.
Morning sessions will include a keynote address from Jeannette Raymond, community engagement supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Health鈥檚 Center for Public Health Practice, Resource Fair, small and large group discussion, and a panel presentation featuring:
- Bruce Thao, director of the Minnesota Department of Health鈥檚 Center for Health Equity
- Jennifer DeCubellis, deputy county administrator 鈥 health and human services for Hennepin County
- Lisa Skjefte, healthy equity specialist and American Indian community liaison
- Adair Mosely, president and CEO of Pillsbury United Communities
The afternoon will provide opportunities to share strategies and resources across key dimensions of health, including: clinical care, community-based initiatives and education-based initiatives. Advocacy Boot Camp will also help attendees develop a tool kit for future action and policy work.
Learning objectives include:
- Identifying disparities in health outcomes in Minnesota and the intersections of social determinants, such as education, clinical care and community based factors.
- Expanding knowledge of successful models and resources for personal and community health.
- Identifying and considering opportunities for engagement, advocacy and collaboration with community initiatives and within the social work profession.
Participants in the free, day-long summit 鈥 which will be held in the Rauenhorst Ballroom on the third floor of Coeur de Catherine 鈥 will receive a Certificate of Attendance for up to six hours of continuing education.
