Tutoring and Learning Center

The Tutoring and Learning Center consists of the Writing and Reading Center, and the Math and Science Center.  Both Centers provide academic support to students across the university, partner with faculty in finding ways to meet students鈥 diverse learning needs, and cultivate the leadership potential of the peer tutors who work in the Tutoring and Learning Center. All Tutoring and Learning services are provided at no charge.

Join the Writing and Reading Center for any of our 鈥淒onuts 鈥榥 Coffee Write-In鈥 events in Spring 2025. Dates, times, and locations will be announced in January 2025. A 鈥淲rite-In鈥 is a chunk of dedicated time for you to sit down and start, continue, or finish any paper you鈥檙e working on for any class. We serve coffee, tea, and donuts to keep you fueled. It鈥檚 like a study hall, but there鈥檚 no shushing.

Research shows that writing in community like this (even when you鈥檙e not speaking to anyone!) improves your accountability, focus, and productivity. In fact, the participants of our previous Write-Ins said they found it "motivating" to write in the same room at the same time, and several even said they made it to the finish line with some pretty tough assignments by the end of the event. Expert and friendly writing tutors float around to answer your writing questions and generally support you as you write away.

Write-Ins are in either CDC 21 (The Tutoring and Learning Center, which is on the Ground level of CDC) on Thursday nights, or in the library (the main floor鈥檚 Dew Drop area) on Tuesday mornings roughly every other week of the semester. RSVP is not required (you鈥檒l just sign in when you get here). Each Write-Ins is scheduled for two hours, but you can come for all or part of the time鈥搚our choice. Open to ALL students鈥揅FA, CFW, Grad, and anyone else鈥搉o matter what your major, program, or type of paper you bring to work on.

You can also join us online by for a google meet link. Please note that there is no need to RSVP for the event; the link above is only for people who wish to join the online Write-In. Once you register, we will send you the meeting link.

As we like to say in the Writing and Reading Center: Never write alone!

Want to encourage your students to use the Writing and Reading Center? Share our commercial (see below) on your Canvas site, especially if you teach asynchronously. For in-person classes, we also offer a 15-20 minute interactive presentation in your classroom (but preferably in our space, CDC 21).  To request a visit, just email tutoring@stkate.edu with the date and time you'd like us to present.  Thank you for encouraging your students to use our services!

Want to require every student in your class to have a tutorial with us?  Please let us know ahead of time at tutoring@stkate.edu so that we can ensure we have the capacity to provide that service. Providing the relevant assignment sheets for us to share with the tutors is also helpful so that they can be particularly well-prepared for these tutorials with your students.  Thank you for requiring your students to use our services!
