Rahul Roy is a plant molecular biologist focusing on the mechanisms of nectar production in flowering plants and plant root movements. He teaches Foundations of Biology, Environmental Biology, Plant Biology and Senior Seminar writing courses at St. Kate's. His lab research focuses on the biochemical analysis of colorful nectar, dissecting genetic networks in nectar production of model flowers and the morphometry of plant root movement in response to touch and gravity. As a student researcher in the Roy lab you will train in microscopy, genetic, biochemical, cellular and molecular techniques to elucidate biological networks. Dr. Roy's research has been funded by NASA, NSF, USDA and LCCMR. He has mentored >15 undergraduate and graduate researchers. Dr. Roy believes in trauma-informed pedagogy and creating safe spaces for students to practice science and communicate it effectively. Students in the Roy lab learn to ask foundational scientific questions, think critically, formulate hypothesis, design experiments, analyze data and disseminate results. He also advises the BioClub and helps coordinate efforts on campus for community gardening, pollinator friendly spaces and outreach with K-12.When not teaching science or tinkering in the lab, he gardens with his family, devours electronic music, pretends he is on a "Chopped" episode in his kitchen, hammock camps on hiking trails and hopes for peace on the planet.
